Based on scientific evidence, fish oil is effective for lowering triglycerides. It is likely effective for preventing heart disease and heart attacks based on its effects on blood triglyceride levels; however, clinical trials have not tested this effect specifically.
Case reports show that fish oil is has been effective for a myriad of health issues including:
· High blood pressure · Stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis · Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) · Abnormal sensitivity to cold (Raynaud's syndrome) · Preventing heart attack &stroke à stabilizes plaque in arteries thus reducing risk for heart attach and stroke. · Osteoporosis, alone or in combination with calcium and evening primrose oil · Preventing hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) · Improving night vision in children with dyslexia · Preventing kidney problems · Bipolar disorder (controversial) · Depression, when taken with conventional antidepressant medications · Promoting weight loss · Preventing cancers such as prostate, endometrial, oral and pharyngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer · Preventing eye disease (age-related maculopathy) · Reducing the risk of blood vessel re-blockage after heart bypass surgery or "balloon" catheterization (balloon angioplasty) · Preventing high blood pressure and kidney problems after heart transplant · Preventing damage to the kidneys and high blood pressure caused by taking a drug called cyclosporine · Improving movement disorders in children, in combination with evening primrose oil, thyme oil, and vitamin E · Preventing blockage of grafts used in kidney dialysis · Lowering cholesterol · Slowing weight loss in patients with advanced cancer · Asthma in children · ADHD · Preventing cataracts
Fish oils contain certain "fatty acids" that reduce pain and swelling. These fatty acids also prevent the blood from clotting easily. High doses might keep blood from clotting and can INCREASE the chance of bleeding.
Fish oils are safe for most people. They can cause side effects including belching, bad breath, heartburn, and nosebleeds. Taking fish oil supplements with meals or freezing them can often decrease these side effects.
Some fish meats and low-grade supplements are contaminated with mercury and other industrial and environmental chemicals. Wild catch/organic fish and high grade/certified fish oil supplements such as CarlsonÔ fish oil products do not contain these toxins. You have liver disease. You are allergic to fish or seafood.
Consult your healthcare provider prior to taking fish oil supplements if: You have a condition called bipolar disorder. Some case reports indicate that some patients with bipolar disease who have taken fish oil have extended periods of hypomania while other studies support its effectiveness for mood stablization. You have an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD). A recent clinical trial suggests that the risk of VT/VF may increase in patients with and ICD who take high doses of fish oil (1.8 g/day).
